he world has changed and if we don’t want to be left back, we need to change with it. Technology brings with it the opportunity to educate ourselves on any subject. From learning how to cook to learning how to code. It allows us to do anything we want, from being a freelance to owning a billion dollar company. To make sure all this information is accessible to you and your family, it is important that you speak the same language. Even though most of the information is in English, only about 20% of the world speaks the language and most don’t even speak it fluently. In a world with around 7.5 billion people that’s about 1.5 billion. Or about five times the population of the united states.
Sure, computers can translate information to almost any language. But computer translation is still in it’s infancy. The results are hardly accurate and when you learn something in an unreliable way, what kind of result do you expect to get? Furthermore, when you’re going to use the information you learned most of the jobs will be in English. There are alternatives, you can always learn Chinese or Japanese but English is by far the easier language to learn. Not to mention the isolation you will feel if you’re in an area where you can’t understand anyone around you. Not understanding a common language with the people surrounding you will make you feel like you’re alone in the world. That the most basic need for communication has been taken away from you.
Here are a few more reasons why one should learn English:
Basic computer skills:
No matter what you decide to do in the world, today you have to know how to use a computer. And most of the world’s computers were designed with English in mind. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about coding, sending email, taking online classes or even just playing games you will have to know English just to get along with the program. Most issues people have with computers is not being able to navigate them properly. Knowing English even at an average level will allow you to understand the logic of most of them.
Most business transactions are conducted in English. You will see people from all around the world meeting up and speaking English. You want to have every advantage so don’t pass up on this one. From hotel clerks to vendors at the market, you will find that the ones who speak English make more sales and more tips. Imagine going to a country where no one speaks your language, you will likely stick to the people you can understand. That is why knowing a language that creates a common denominator between you and your clients is crucial.
When traveling to other countries:
No matter where you are, more times than not you will find an English speaker. In most tourist countries it’s considered a must for the locals to know English at least at a basic level. These countries understand that if you want people to come back they have to enjoy themselves and if they can’t understand the locals that’s not going to happen. Even more important, mo matter where you in the world most doctors speak English. Most hospitals understand that without communicating with the patients they will not be able to diagnose them. If you need help and are in a country that doesn’t speak your language you will resort to a language that other people might understand. Whether it’s a dentist, paramedic or anything else you need to be able to explain what hurts quickly and efficiently. If you don’t speak a common language with the people who are trying to help you, you have a real problem.
There are literally no limitations today if you can just speak a language others can understand.
